What is an e-Challan?
An e-Challan is a digital traffic citation issued by the competent traffic authorities for violation of provisions under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 and allied rules, including but not limited to offences such as overspeeding, red light violation, driving without valid documents, or similar infractions. The system of e-Challan, operational across India since 2016, is a Government initiative to promote digital compliance, efficiency, and road safety.
Such challans are generated through CCTV surveillance, automated monitoring systems, speed detection devices, or on-ground patrol officers. The challan is then transmitted to the registered owner of the vehicle via SMS or e-mail through the centralized VAHAN database.
How the e-Challan System Operates
- Detection of violation through CCTV, patrol units, or speed detection devices.
- Retrieval of vehicle owner’s particulars through the official registration database.
- Generation of an e-Challan with complete violation details, including type of offence, date, time, place, and prescribed penalty.
- Dispatch of challan notification to the registered mobile number or e-mail ID of the owner.
- The party may discharge the liability either through online payment or through the prescribed offline mechanism.
Benefits of Paying e-Challan Online

- Impounding of Vehicle upon continued non-payment of challans.
Mandatory Documents to Avoid Traffic Challans
- Driving Licence
- Registration Certificate (RC)
